Divali pictures

...mostly for smiggitysmee's spiritual edification.I sort of abandoned the plan on Tuesday. I was going to have tons of pictures and they were all going to be breathtaking. But I kept forgetting, and when I remembered I would find I had already lost the camera to my sister, who used it mainly for taking pictures of ceilings and dogs. So I mostly did not get any pictures of anything, and what I did get kind of suck. But...!I forgot to take a picture of the deyas the way we bought them, but they come in plastic bags in cardboard boxes, and they are very dusty, and they have tiny cracks in them. You have to soak them before you can do anything else.We dried them on newspapers on the floor because the table on which we normally do it has taken a lover and they have run off together. Or so I like to think. Whatever, we don't know where it is.While all this was going on, Ron/Peter the dog was having a snack on the veranda. We set up a deya-making station on top of my poor mother's washing machine and dryer. What you have to do is fill the deyas with oil, in which you dip the wicks - the little white strings - which you then squeeze and light with matches. Finally, we lined up the deyas on the little wall in front of the house. Normally we put deyas everywhere. But we were all so lazy on Tuesday and nobody could get anybody to do anything. And you see how it turned out.And here is a picture of Rufus moping, having spent the entire evening rolling in oil and and dirt. The end. :)

Lovely! The dogs have gotten so big. Let's set a Diwali date for 2007.My daddy is coming on Thursday. I can send the OC season 2 as a loaner, just remind the silly man to bring it back with him ;) Is that okay by you?

I'm so glad you like them!Do you know the late night talk shows, where the host occasionally puts on jeans and takes to the streets? And at say, Christmas, there's a family with a hundred shopping bags and six Christmas trees, and the host asks them who was born on Christmas day, and they're like, "...Michael Jackson?" That's what this is going to be like. But, I think, at Divali, people say prayers, they do serious house cleaning, they have food and mithai (sweets), they have pujas (which is a religious kind of ceremony thing that you can have whenever, I guess, but they have special ones). A lot of people come to our house, but they generally aren't Hindu, or they'd be at home doing their own thing. My mother doesn't eat meat for what seems like a random period of time. I don't know, I'm not a proper Hindu - it's my mother, really. But I hope that was helpful in some way. :)

heh, no i don't know these shows (and we don't do christmas), but you've described it very vividly. it sounds like you do know what you're talking about. ooh i have to tell you a funny story. see, the jewish holiday are always so HEAVY and laden with meaning, and that meaning/history/etc gets drilled into our heads. when i was in finland for their most important holiday of the year i was curious to know and participate. so i walk with my friend to where her family is celebrating. there are a lot of people standing around a big fire drinking beer. so i ask, what's the plan, what are we going to do? and she says, uh, well basically we just make a really big fire and drink a lot of beer. to which i said, why, how did it all start? and not even the OLD people could tell me. later on her sister looked it up online and she said it might be some pagan ceremony to do with this and that, but no one could tell me exactly what. heh.

Hi -- I just wanted to let you know that I received your mix CD for the audiography mix trade. I just got back from a holiday trip, so I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. The track listing looks great, though! Also, I doubt that you meant to do this, but you sent me what look like two copies of the CD?Thanks -- I'm looking forward to listening it! And congrats on Trinidad making the World Cup finals (I heard about that on the radio today).

I'm glad you're so optimistic. ;) But I really hope you like it! And thank you for letting me know it arrived in one piece. As for your getting 2 copies: Oh, no. You see the thing is, I finished the mixes after the post office closed, and I was going to leave the country before they opened again, so I asked my mother to send them for me. I left her instructions, but I see now how unclear they were. She must have sent you two of the 3 mixes. Eek. Thanks so much for telling me!Thanks, on behalf of the country - and congratulations to yours as well. :) The day we qualified people were pouring out of their offices and dancing in the streets. I don't even like football (or soccer, as you say?), but it was really wonderful.

Do you know when the mixes were mailed? Mine hasn't arrived yet. Perhaps incorruptibles got it. :)

Sorry for taking so long to reply! I didn't get any comment notification. :/The mixes were mailed on the deadline, the 12th of December. I'm pretty sure now that incorruptibles got yours. I'm so sorry about that! I really should have been more careful about everything. But I'm going to send you another one on Monday. And if you want, since it will take a while to get there, I can send you a zip with all the songs and the cover "art" that you can have in the meantime. Let me know. :)

Sorry for saying this so late, but I sent your mix out a bit later than I said I would - last Wednesday. But you should get one this time. :) OK, re: the zip, but the offer is open indefinitely should you change your mind. :)
